Course Reading Material

Course book: Emptiness by Geshe Tashi Tsering, published by Wisdom Publications.

Supplementary Reading:  The subject of emptiness particularly benefits from reading around, if you have the time.  We’ve recommended a lot of books for this module, with a view to giving you as much information as possible.  If you had to choose only one, we would recommend the first one, by Guy Newland.

  • Introduction to Emptiness, by Guy Newland.
  • The Essence of the Heart Sutra, by His Holiness the Dalai Lama
  • Self, Reality and Reason in Tibetan Philosophy, by Thubten Jinpa
  • The Key to the Treasury of Shunyata, by Sermey Khensur Lobsang Tharchin
  • Transcendent Wisdom, by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, translated by Alan Wallace

Additional Reading: Studying Buddhism in the 21st century comes with many technological advantages – just being on this course would be impossible twenty years ago. It does, however, bring its own disadvantages. The modern day assumptions and beliefs we bring to our study of Buddhism are not addressed by the masters we study, but they can easily hold us back.  To put these assumptions in perspective, we strongly recommend a book by biologist Rupert Sheldrake, a fellow of the Zoological Society and the Cambridge Philosophical Society.  His choice of title was Science Set Free, but it was published in the UK as The Science Delusion.

  • The Science Delusion: Freeing the Spirit of Enquiry (U.K) 2020 edition by Rupert Sheldrake, published by Coronet
